HISTORY

During the first half of the decade of the 1990’s, the business community was being swept by a tide of corporate soul-searching for more meaningful contribution to society, particularly to the less privileged/financially challenged sectors. From this recognition of corporate social responsibility (CSR) emerged values in the conduct of business and corporate policies directed towards a more communitarian/humane outlook.

For companies like the Philippine Stock Exchange, Inc. (PSE), whose activities remarkably influence the nation’s social and economic progress, the practice of CSR is even more paramount. The call for the Exchange’s social awareness has all the more been heightened by the realization that efforts to fulfill social commitment constitute an immeasurable contribution to national development.

In 1995, the PSE initial action to the challenge of becoming a socially responsible corporation was its participation in various socio-oriented activities. The year saw a period of social action and community services for the Exchange. It became an active member of the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) and supported PBSP programs aimed at helping the Filipino community.

But the social responsibility of a company should manifest itself not only in occasional donations and impersonal charity work, but more significantly, in a fundamental dedication to sustain programs geared to benefit the society. Thus, true to its thrusts to pursue its CSR mandate, PSE formed the PSE Foundation, Inc. (PSEFI) on November 10, 1995. By virtue of BIR rulings in 1995, 2002 and 2003, the Foundation was declared a non-stock, non-profit donee institution. Since then, the PSEFI acted as the CSR arm of the PSE, helping and providing livelihood and education to the less privileged members of the society. Its membership in the League of Corporate Foundations, Inc. in April 1997 further re-enforced its commitment to be of social service to the community.

It was duly accredited by the Philippine Council for Non-Government Organization Certification (PCNC) on April 25, 2003 as a qualified tax-exempt done institution in accordance with the provisions of Revenue Regulation No. 13-98, wherein donations received shall entitle the donor to full or limited deduction and exemption from the donor’s tax of the National Internal Revenue Code of 1997, subject to the representations and commitments set forth in the application for accreditation filed with the PCNC.
